A major short-course
designed as a self-learning guide and entitled ‘Concepts in Applied Fluvial
Sedimentology’ is now available to download from the Sponsors’ web pages on FRG
website (Doc IDs 292 to 308). This 300 page short-course is designed around a
comprehensive suite of graphical images and is split into the following themes:
1.
Introduction to
fluvial systems (morphology, classification, terminology etc).
2.
Fluvial
sedimentary structures and facies classification schemes.
3.
Fluvial
architectural elements.
4.
Fluvial bounding
surfaces.
5.
The nature of
the stratigraphic record. What actually gets preserved?
6.
Problems
associated with interpretation of 1D data (e.g. core).
7.
Fluvial facies
models and reconstruction of fluvial system type from outcrop and subsurface
data.
8.
Basics of
fluvial sequence stratigraphy: external controls on fluvial successions
(climate, tectonics, sediment supply, basin setting etc).
9.
Examples of
fluvial outcrops as analogues for reservoirs.
10. Basics of fluvial reservoir modelling: prediction of
sand body connectivity and heterogeneity.
